Aquilo is the ambient electro-pop project a pair of neighbours, Ben Fletcher and Tom Higham, from the Lake District. Describing their sound as “a sort of soft, melodic electro” and both barely in their twenties they are emerging as ones to watch over the next year and I think for many years to come! They have a really interesting sound and I think they have a lot of space to grow and develop their sound. They certainly have time on their side. The pair count Lily Allen as a fan while their breakout single ‘You There’ is featured on the first trailer for Camp X-Ray, the forthcoming Guantanamo Bay drama starring Kristen Stewart. Their self-titled introductory EP was released in 2014, and their new EP Human came out earlier this year. Before becoming the duo they are now, they fronted two rival bands in their hometown of Silverdale, Lancashire. While was Higham thrashing to metal, Fletcher was leaning toward grunge. In time, Higham approached Fletcher after they each began producing their own solo material, switching amps and pedals for laptops and Logic. After coming together to form Aquilo they became completely focused on perfecting their sound. So focused that they in-fact completely forgot about their song featuring on the Camp X-Ray trailer, only realising after receiving a link to the trailer.
If you’re a fan of London Grammar or Aquilo’s fellow Lake District-dwellers Wild Beasts you should have a listen to these guys. I think you’ll find much to love in Aquilo’s lush electronic soundscapes, a far cry from their frenetic adolescent days. New single I Gave It All, a slow-burning piece of piano-led pop, particularly evokes the beauty of their homeland. They also have a slight hint at similarities with Coldplay.
Highly recommend you all giving Aquilo a listen to and see what you think! Feel free to let me know what you think.
